In an effort to educate each child individually, it is important to consider how each child can best learn. In the Old Rochester Regional School District, Massachusetts School Superintendency Union #55 (ORRSD), we provide English Language Learners (ELLs) or Limited English Proficient (LEP) students with the opportunity to become proficient in English and provide them with full access to the curriculum. Some students do not have a strong base of literacy or fluency in their first language and need to develop essential skills in Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing in English. In order to accomplish these goals, English Language Learners will receive Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) in classrooms in accordance with state and federal law. Sheltered instruction addresses the concepts and skills as defined in the curriculum and assists students with language development. Students may participate in English Language Development (ELD) classes, if necessary.
